He labored all his life as a farm worker outside of Madrid, Spain. Both he and his wife were very devout. After the birth and death of their only child, they served God in perfect continence. One day the farm owner went to check if Isidro was working and found him under a tree praying, while an angel plowed the field. One winter, when food was scarce, Isidro came across some starving birds and fed them most of the corn he was carrying to the mill. Miraculously, when he reached the mill, the sack was full and rendered twice as much as usual. He was known to be extremely generous to those less fortunate, often having very little left for himself. The Feast day April 4th.

Lynn Garlick Retablos grew organically over a period of 20 years. To create these heart-felt paintings of saints, angels and blessings, Lynn has brought to the folk art of Retablo making, all the skills and passions that she has learned through a lifetime of drawing, woodworking and painting. She is a long time resident of Taos, New Mexico. Moved by the sacred art of the retablo paintings and the santeros (saint makers) who made them, she started creating them herself. Lynn handcarves and paints her original designs on the traditionally used ponderosa pine planks. Then she decoupages high quality prints of her originals onto pine boards, in an old school technique used for the Italian altar screens of medieval Europe.

Speaking of her work, Lynn says, "The diverse cultures and the landscape of this part of the country deeply and yet unintentionally influenced me both artistically and spiritually. I am nourished by Northern New Mexico's rugged wildness and rawness. The profound devotion found in the different traditions and faiths here are unusual and inspiring. My original Retablos are painted on board with watercolor. I produce these prints with a deep appreciation of the santero and what has come before".

Includes a statement about the saint on the reverse side. Most are available as either an ornament or a wall hanging. Have one, bought one for a friend

"My volunteer work is focused on land conservation and prairie restoration. I have one of these San Isidro retablos hanging in my kitchen and it often reminds me to give thanks for the outstanding work that the Coastal Prairie Conservancy is doing, so I bought one of these for our Land Conservation Director."

Beautiful retablo of San Isidro

"Beautiful piece of devotional art. I formerly lived in New Mexico, and remember walks along the acequia. I once attended a procession where the waterways were blessed at the beginning of the planting season, and an alabado to San Isidro was sung while flower petals were dropped into the swirling waters of the acequia. This retablo is a beautiful reminder of that time."
