Nearly three decades ago John D. (Jack) Salopek gave initial life to Grumpy Jack's Barbecue sauce in his home kitchen. Born & raised in the Mesilla Valley near Las Cruces, New Mexico, Jack Always enjoyed preparing all types of meat whether it be on a spit, on the grill, or in a smoker. This passion, in part, can be attributed to his strong agricultural background and the numerous family cookouts. Over the years Jack came to realize that there was something missing, a barbecue sauce that he truly enjoyed to go along with all this delicious meat. He set out to produce his own sauce. A sauce he would keep tweaking over the years until he found the perfect combination of flavors. This sauce soon became a favorite at family functions. Neighbors started to ask for it for their own use. After much input & encouragement from family and friends enjoying the barbecue sauce, Grumpy Jack's was born.

Some place the origin of barbecue sauce at the formation of the first American colonies in the 17th century. References to the substance start occurring in both English and French literature over the next two hundred years. South Carolina mustard sauce, a type of barbecue sauce, may be traced to German settlers in the 18th century. Early cookbooks did not tend to include recipes for barbecue sauce. The first commercially produced barbecue sauce was made by the Georgia Barbecue Sauce Company in Atlanta, Georgia. Its sauce was advertised for sale in the Atlanta Constitution, January 31, 1909. Heinz released its barbecue sauce in 1940. Kraft Foods also started making cooking oils with bags of spice attached, supplying another market entrance of barbecue sauce.
